A Village School

November 5, 2010

Kindlehill’s building project, courtesy of the government stimulus building project, is possibly the most unique in the country. Tucked away in Lake Street, Wentworth Falls, the small independent primary school is constructing a spiral shaped performance space and kindy from cob, straw bale, recycled material. A woodworker skilled in 16th century carpentry techniques built the spectacular timber columns. The existing building, once the original home of Blue Mountains Grammar, is also undergoing extensive renovations, again drawing on building materials with low embodied energy.

The project was designed by two of the school’s parents. Another parent manages the construction project. Another still, constructed the windows. Others parents have landscaped gardens and fashioned relief sculptures from cob. Lynn Daniel, one of the founder teachers at the school, sees the building as a canvas on which members of the school community can express their creativity.

The building work encapsulates Kindlehill’s distinctive approach to education. Its Rudolf Steiner based curriculum values community, environment, innovation, self-expression and creativity.  This year Kindlehill celebrated its 10th anniversary. From its inception, the idea of creating a village was a guiding principle. Over that time the school has grown from a mere seventeen students to ninety today. Over the next few years, Kindlehill will continue to expand, progressively moving towards Year 10.

On Saturday, November 13th, Kindlehill will open its doors to the public with an Open Day. The children’s work will be on display. Hand made crafts and delicious wholesome food will be available for sale and building’s construction manager will be conducting tours of the site.
