In term 1 2023, Kindlehill’s Year 10 cohort commenced a 2-term pilot program, trialling the place-based learning model we will employ when our Senior School Program, Buran Nulgarra – Strength and Learning Through Togetherness, commences in Term 1 2024. Six local home-schooled students have also joined the program, which seeks to address a real-world problem that matters in our community.
Phase 1 of the Pilot program was called Bring Back the Milk Run and saw students researching whether bulk milk sales and selling milk in glass bottles is a more sustainable way to address the astronomical amount of plastic waste generated by daily milk consumption. In phase 2 of the project, the scope has been expanded to consider single use plastics in groceries more broadly. Students have met with the Acting Store Managers at Katoomba Coles and Woolworths, surveyed cafes about their volume of plastic use and individuals about their willingness to make changes to their grocery purchasing habits. In phase 3, which will commence in term 2, students will establish how they can make the greatest impact in our community with the information that they have gathered.
We look forward to sharing our results!
