Barbara Baldwin visits Kindlehill School in May 2013
Barbara Baldwin, a very experienced and highly regarded educator in Steiner and mainstream education; recently visited Kindlehill School. Barbara’s work takes her around the world educating teachers and parents of students with special needs and challenging behaviours. Barbara met with teachers and visited classrooms. We were rewarded with valuable insights about the different ways in which students learn. Barbara commented on the richness of our classrooms and their fitness for learning for the future: varied work and play areas indoors, tables that promoted social learning and our rich external garden and built environment.
Barbara also presented a talk to parents “The Art of Parenting” in which she discussed and answered questions about the challenges we face in parenting today, and the gifts those challenges bring to us as adults. Her talk drew many parents from the school as well as anthroposophically interested visitors from the community. Barbara made the profound observation that it is not our own talents as parents that teach our children, but our struggles. The gifts we give our children are the ways in which we face our challenges in life, a comment worth pondering deeply…
