2025 Chess Competition

June 11, 2025

Last week, after a term of their practice schedule, most of our primary school children took part in an interschool chess competition. Teams were matched with similar ability, which made for some exciting and well-balanced games. Some of the most fun moments came when we were paired against our own school mates. There were lots of smiles and friendly matches!

Team captains stepped up beautifully, recording details on the official scoring sheets – not an easy feat for the younger children! Kindlehill’s scores ranged from 6.5 to 17 points with an average of 11.5. Very well done to Harry, Ritchie, Daniel and Micah on the score of 17! The team that scored first place (from another school) ended on 24.5 points – just amazing!

Class 4-5 and 6 shone with some truly impressive moves and sharp strategic thinking. Class 2-3 worked diligently at all of their games and with the big feelings that can arise on a competition day.

During the breaks, the energy didn’t stop! Children joined in friendly interschool games of basketball and soccer, making it a full day of fun, incredible focus, and great sportsmanship.

Chess nurtures mathematical thinking, patience, and the ability to hold multiple possibilities in mind. These are all qualities that begin to blossom strongly in the middle years of primary school. The competition itself helps children practise flexible and respectful social engagement. The structure of the game and the setting of the day offered a beautiful balance between inner discipline and outer connection. What an ideal learning environment for all the children!
