Class 3-4 Camp

September 17, 2024

Don’t adjust or reach for glasses! The photo is blurry because we were going FAST! I am making the case for a BILLY CART DERBY HOLIDAY!

Children collaboratively launch a billy cart down a dirt hill, embracing the exhilaration and connection of risky play.

There is plenty of articles and readings out there that support the notion of risky play. The benefits to child development includes building self confidence and self esteem, resilience and executive functioning skills and even risk managements skills.

There are a number of factors to risky play that researchers encourage – play with heights, high speeds, with tools, near elements ( such as near fire, water), play with a chance of getting lost and ‘rough and tumble’ play.
So I am proposing These holidays could be the ultimate Billy Cart Making and riding challenge. It’s risky play – thinking about speed, tools, heights and ‘rough and tumble’.

On the recent class camp I had the sheer joy of watching kids fly down a hill on a billy cart and experience exhilaration and physical freedom. And if you think it was only the children and young people,  one of the parents on camp was eager as any of the children.

A project of building and riding billycarts is a project that flexes many learning muscles – designing, experimenting, collaboration and communication, problem solving as well as the benefits of rich imaginative and risky play. A great activity for the holidays whatever the age.

Wishing our school community a fun-filled, billy – cart  adventuring holiday!
