Hanging With the Swamp

August 28, 2024

This term class 8 – 10, as part of an environmental management investigation, are hanging with the swamp at Wentworth Falls.

Here are some of our most astounding findings so far:
Hanging swamps are unique ecosystems found in very few places, including the Blue Mountains.
The hanging swamp at Wenty is 20,000 years old.
The Swamp at Wenty holds 10 x the water that you can see in the lake.
Swamps only make up 4% of soils but hold 1/3 of soil carbon.

We are heading out weekly to collect data, observe the biodiversity and to understand the ecological importance of the hanging swamp.

Hopefully by the end, we will love the swamp and will be ready to teach others how to as well!
