Caring for Country

March 22, 2023

Last week, Year 10 students met with Chris Tobin as part of their investigation into reducing single use plastic milk containers in our region. We asked Chris what it meant for him to see one less everyday plastic item in landfill. The following is Ayla’s reflection of the meeting with Chris.

Sitting with the trees shading our backs, listening to Chris Tobin talk about culture and country. Talking about First Nations beliefs. Talking about how to care for our land and how to respect the animals and plants. About how the spirits are all around, caring for us. He told us that this country is for everyone but that comes with responsibility. He said: “Respect people’s opinions, but know in your heart that its everyone’s land”.

I think this is important because I believe that more people need to connect with country so that they care more about the land and will want to fight for it more. We can try and do this by listening to First Nations voices, by being on country and learning from the land. Ayla
