Camp – Wallaginji, The Great Barrier Reef

December 5, 2023

Years 8 – 10, Sarah, Roman and I, camped 8 days on an incredibly beautiful and remote island that is part of the Great Barrier Reef. Daily ecology lessons deepened our understanding of the intricacies of reef life and it vulnerabilities to climate change.

We snorkelled the coral garden of the drop off, and had close encounters with turtles, reef sharks and myriads of fish. The old mariner aboard the return boat told the students, “It’s up to you, the GBR needs your help”.

Unpredictability was something we experienced every day, and the cancellation of our due return journey was an interesting one! Despite running short on food and water, we knew there were people around us checking in and keeping us safe; from fellow campers, boat visitors to Andrew in the School office. We learnt a lot about supporting one another, staying the course and weathering unpredictability.
