Woodwork at Kindlehill, a Necessary Tradition, December 2020

December 2, 2020

Students have been busy in our new Artisan Studio with Roy, the Leura Bodger. High School students are putting the finishing touches on no-nail stools made with green timber; Erica’s class has designed and made insect homes; and S’haila’s class is making nesting boxes, which links with their current bird study lesson. The nesting boxes and insect homes will soon be installed around the school.

It has been a fabulous experience having Roy teach our students. Roy is a master of working with green timber straight from the forest, using hand-made tools and a pole lathe. He lets nothing go to waste: he will re-purpose an off cut from a bent and rusty nail! If the timber is not from surplus forest cuttings he will salvage wood from old pallets or wherever he can get his hands on “waste” wood. Then he weaves his magic, creating something beautiful and purposeful.
